THE NEW ZEALAND CHAMBER OF
COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY INC.
With a land area of 266 square kilometres, an area similar in size to
the United Kingdom, and with a population of just over 3.5 million,
New Zealand has an active and influential network of 33 chambers of
commerce serving over 18,000 members- the largest association of
business in New Zealand. The constituent owners of the New Zealand
Chamber of Commerce are four regions with a regional chamber office in
Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.
Located in the most densely populated area of New Zealand, the
Auckland Regional Chamber of Commerce has over 8000 members. With a
population of almost 1 million, the Auckland region is the major
gateway to New Zealand and has the highest concentration of
manufacturing and exporting outlets in the country. The Canterbury
Employers' Chamber of Commerce in Christchurch, and the Otago
Employers' Chamber of Commerce in Dunedin together with chambers in
their regions support over 4000 members representing the widest cross
section of industry and commerce.
The Wellington Chamber of Commerce located in New Zealand's capital
region of over 2500 members. In addition to being the political
capital, Wellington is the finance capital and the banking and
insurance centre of the country and has the largest concentration of
corporate head offices. New Zealand's small economy is heavily
dependent on overseas trade. Traditionally, a large proportion of New
Zealand's exports - mainly agricultural products - went to the United
Kingdom. In recent years, however. New Zealand has moved away from its
dependence on dairy, meat and wool exports as forestry, horticulture,
fishing and manufacture have become more significant. Tourism is also
an increasingly important sector of the economy.
